What Counts as Storm Debris?
After a major Sioux Falls storm, you're typically dealing with some combination of:
- Fallen branches and downed trees (or sections of trees)
- Damaged or blown-off shingles and roofing material
- Damaged siding, gutters, or fascia
- Fence sections blown down or snapped
- Damaged outdoor furniture, sheds, or outbuildings
- Hail-damaged items from the yard or garage
Most of this goes straight into the dumpster. The exceptions are anything with refrigerant (a chest freezer that got destroyed in the storm, for example) or hazardous materials. Check our full prohibited items list if you're unsure about something.
After a Storm: Safety Before Cleanup
Before you start hauling branches, do a quick safety sweep:
- Look up. Widow-maker branches — large limbs still partially attached and hanging overhead — are a real hazard. Don't work under them. Call a tree service to take them down safely first.
- Check for downed power lines. If lines are down anywhere on or near your property, stay back and call MidAmerican Energy or Northwestern Energy before doing anything else.
- Assess structural damage. If a tree hit your home or garage, have a contractor evaluate before removing debris that might be supporting a compromised structure.
Once the property is safe to work on, the cleanup itself goes quickly with the right setup.
The Fastest Way to Clear Storm Debris
The mistake most people make is trying to manage storm debris the same way they'd manage normal yard waste — bags, lawn cart, truck runs. That works fine for a normal cleanup. After a real storm, you're dealing with volumes that will take days on that approach.
A dumpster in the driveway changes the math entirely. You put in branches, sections of fence, roofing material, and anything else as you go. No stopping to bag, no truck runs, no waiting for the city's brush pickup schedule. When you're done, we come get it.
What Size Dumpster for Storm Cleanup?
For most residential storm cleanups in Sioux Falls — a yard full of branches, some fence sections, maybe some roofing debris — a 20-yard dumpster is the right size. It's what we carry, and it handles the large majority of storm jobs.
Weight is worth mentioning: wet wood is heavy. If a major tree came down and you're dealing with a large trunk and significant root ball material, that weight adds up. Our flat rate includes 1 ton; overage is $45/ton. For a really large tree job, budget for 2–3 tons total.
Roofing and Siding Damage
If your home took damage to the roof or siding and you're working with a contractor to make repairs, the demo debris from that repair — torn-off shingles, damaged siding panels, old flashing — all goes into the dumpster. Shingles are heavy, so if it's a full roof tear-off on a large home, let us know and we'll discuss weight expectations.
Many Sioux Falls homeowners and contractors use us specifically for roofing projects. It's one of the cleaner uses of a roll-off — shingles load fast, and pickup is straightforward.
